Kids & youth

Sunday School at St. John’s

Kindergarten through 6th grade, every Sunday at 10 AM. Kids hear the big story of God’s love, make things with their hands, and come upstairs to share Communion with their families.

How Sunday works

  1. 10:00

    Straight downstairs

Bring your kids down to Miss Chelsy as you arrive. No check-in to fill out.

  2. Sunday School

    The big story

A Bible story told well, conversation, and something to make with their hands.

  3. Communion

    Back upstairs

They join you in time for Holy Communion, so the family worships together.

  4. After

    Coffee hour

Coffee, bagels, and friends, for kids and grown-ups alike.

Who leads it

Meet Miss Chelsy

Chelsy DeHart (the kids call her Miss Chelsy) leads Sunday School and Youth Corp at St. John’s, and she does the same work for the whole region: she is the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island’s Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, supporting youth leaders in churches across Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

She helped create the StoryMakers Sunday School curriculum from its very beginning, now used in hundreds of churches, and today she writes curriculum for the Ministry Leadership Center, including material for Advent. Kids get someone who knows exactly what she’s doing, and loves doing it.

What they learn

The big story, told well

Sunday School follows StoryMakers, a curriculum born in a New York City church: each week kids work through the Bible’s big story with beautiful, illustrated booklets, conversation and hands-on making. They learn that they belong to God, and that the church is theirs too.

Good to know

Parents’ questions

Who can come?

Any child in kindergarten through 6th grade, whether it’s your family’s first Sunday or your fiftieth. No sign-up needed; just come.

Where do the kids go?

Bring them downstairs to Miss Chelsy as you arrive at 10; there’s no check-in to fill out. They come back upstairs to join you in time for Holy Communion.

Who teaches Sunday School?

Miss Chelsy and our Sunday School teachers, who are all trained and background-checked.

Can my kids stay in the service instead?

Of course. Children are welcome in worship, wiggles and all, and our Prayground, right in the nave, is there for them.

Is there a Christmas pageant?

Yes: a children’s Christmas pageant in December (date coming soon), and a children’s service on Holy Saturday before Easter.

What about older kids and teens?

That’s Youth Corp, our youth group for grades 6 through 12, meeting Sunday evenings and led by Miss Chelsy. Email her to hear what’s coming up.

What about babies and toddlers?

Babies and toddlers are welcome with you in the service, and the Prayground, right in the nave, is made for them. Families with Littles, our group for parents of young children, gets together through the year; email the office to join.
